124x119 cm ~ Painting, Oil
Sennelier oil paint sticks on assembled wooden panels. This painting is large, massive, and heavy (over 10 kg).
Painted in 2001, it's my first large-format work. After browsing through an architecture magazine, I kept an image of a space I liked. Then I incorporated characters from fashion magazines. The composition is like the staging of a play or a film. The perspective seems to continue from the interior of the painting into our real space. But the characters themselves are rather solitary: they don't look at us, nor at each other!
We can draw a parallel with the paintings of the Flemish Primitives:
the characters, filled with religious devotion, are withdrawn into themselves, don't call out to the viewer, and seem to float in space.
